Anglo-Catalan Society News Letter

September 2007

Swansea Conference News : Please find attached the programme for this year’s conference, which is to be held at the University of Swansea and the Village Hotel in Swansea. You will see that the conference registration fee is slightly higher than last year. This is primarily because we are fortunate to be able to include the UK premiere of Ventura Pons’s Barcelona, a map at the Taliesin Centre on Friday 18 th November. Any changes to the programme will be advertised on the Society web-site. The conference registration form should be returned to the ACS Treasurer by 25 th October, at the latest.

Conference Accommodation: We have secured a special deal on accommodation at the Village Hotel in Swansea of £70 B&B per room per night for single and £77 for double occupancy. The hotel is currently holding 35 rooms for us. In order to book, please contact the following number, quoting 'Anglo-Catalan' when you make your booking: 0870 111 0517. The rooms will only be held until two months prior to the conference, so please make sure you make your booking as soon as possible. Hotel details can be found at: www.village-hotels.co.uk/hotels/swansea/.

Student Members: We are very keen to promote Catalan awareness across all generations. In order for Catalan studies to thrive and develop, we feel it is essential that the younger members have a greater presence and more active role within our society. Thus, we would like our conferences to include specific discussion and poster based sessions in which young people have an opportunity to express their opinions on why they are interested in studying Catalan, and are hoping for a record number of young Catalanists at this year's annual conference. We will be contacting student reps and Catalan lectors at British Universities and hope that this will result in all student 'becas' being taken up this year. During the conference itself, we do not want to detract from the academic side of the proceedings but we will be making every effort to feel that young Catalanists feel included by holding informal discussions around a poster session. Hopefully, this conference will allow for a fruitful exchange of Catalan material and a chance for young Catalanists to get together and celebrate Catalan language and culture. We would welcome any other suggestions as to how we may promote the conference to young people. Please contact: Ben Bird at benbird82@yahoo.co.uk or Jill Buckenham at jill@faura.me.uk. Many thanks.

ACSOP : The latest ACSOP volume, A Female Scene, edited by Montserrat Roser i Puig, is now available from Five Leaves Press (see enclosed flyer). We are currently preparing Mercè Ibarz’s Joan Gili Memorial lecture of 2006 for publication with the University of Birmingham. For further information on publications, visit the publications page. You will find information on how to sponsor the site.

Behind the Spanish Barricades : We are pleased to enclose information on the publication of Langdon-Davies’s account of events of the Spanish Civil War. There will be various events to mark the launch of the volume, including a presentation about his life and work during the conference at Swansea (see attached flyer).

II International Symposium on Catalan Studies: Please find enclosed a copy of the programme for the symposium, to be held at the Instituto Cervantes in Berlin on 1-2 October 2007.

Please do not hesitate to contact me for further information.

Yours,

Dr Helena Buffery
